Sariakandi Red Chillies

The sandy chars of the Jamuna in Sariakandi, Sonatala and Dhunat grow much of Bogura's chilli crop, and agriculture officials rate the Sariakandi char chilli among the best in the country. In the dry season the chars turn red as the ripe chillies are picked and spread out to dry, with hundreds of women sorting them by hand. Dried, they go into the hot red pastes and bhortas of North Bengal cooking. Buying a bag here is a cheap, very local souvenir.
