Karatia Zamindar Bari
করটিয়া জমিদার বাড়ি
The seat of the Panni zamindars at Karatia, home of Wajed Ali Khan Panni and next to Government Saadat College.
The Panni family, Afghan in origin and the builders of the Atia Mosque, later made Karatia their base. The best-known of them, Wajed Ali Khan Panni, called 'Chand Mia', was a generous zamindar and a fierce opponent of British rule, and in 1926 he founded Saadat College here, one of the oldest colleges in the region. The zamindar house with its old buildings, gates and pond stands beside the college campus. It makes a good pair with Atia Mosque on a Tangail heritage day.
How to get there
Karatia lies on the Dhaka–Tangail highway a few kilometres before Tangail town; get off any Tangail bus at Karatia and walk or take a rickshaw.
Good to know
Parts of the house may be closed; you can still see the exterior and walk the college grounds.
