Indigo era heritage

In the 19th century, British planters forced farmers in this region to grow indigo, leading to the Indigo Revolt of 1859–60. The planters' nilkuthis, or factory houses, still stand in ruins in Chuadanga and neighbouring Meherpur. Local memory of the period lives on in stories and place names. Visiting a nilkuthi gives context to this chapter of rural resistance.
