Rajshahi Silk

রাজশাহী সিল্ক

A long-running silk tradition whose soft sarees and fabrics carry the city's name.

Rajshahi has been the centre of Bangladesh's silk industry for generations, from mulberry cultivation and silkworm rearing to spinning and weaving. Rajshahi silk sarees are known for their soft sheen and are popular for weddings and festivals. Several workshops and showrooms in the Sapura area let visitors watch looms at work and buy directly. The craft has faced hard times but remains closely tied to the city's identity.

How to get there

Ask a rickshaw for the silk showrooms in Sapura, in the north-east of the city.

Good to know

Ask to see the weaving floor as well as the showroom. Check whether a fabric is pure silk or a blend before buying.
