Shamsher Gazi (1712–1760) rose from a local strongman to rule Roshnabad and much of Tripura in the mid-18th century, and folk memory calls him the 'Tiger of Bhati'. At Champaknagar and Jagannath Sonapur in Chhagalnaiya, right on the Indian border, are places linked to him: a large tank, the remains of a tunnel and the site of his fort, though the fort itself has vanished and part of his capital lies across the border in Tripura. A small tourist centre called Shamsher Gazi's Bansher Kella (bamboo fort) has been built here to keep the story alive. It makes a pleasant half-day out from Feni.
How to get there
From Feni town take a bus or CNG to Chhagalnaiya, then a CNG to Champaknagar/Jagannath Sonapur.
Good to know
This is right on the border; carry ID and follow BGB instructions. Check the resort's opening hours if you plan to eat there.
