Shakrain Kite Festival
সাকরাইন উৎসব
Each January, Old Dhaka's rooftops fill with kites, music and fire-breathers to mark the end of Poush.
Shakrain falls on Poush Sankranti, the last day of the Bangla month of Poush, usually around 14–15 January. From morning, families in Shankhari Bazar, Sutrapur, Gendaria and nearby neighbourhoods fly kites from their rooftops and try to cut each other's strings. In the evening there is music, fireworks and young men blowing fire. It is a neighbourhood festival rather than an official event, so the best way in is to know someone with a rooftop.
Good to know
Join a rooftop gathering through a local contact or guesthouse; watch for falling kite strings in the lanes.
