Egarosindur: Shah Mahmud Mosque and Isa Khan's Fort Site

এগারসিন্দুর: শাহ মাহমুদ মসজিদ ও ঈসা খাঁর দুর্গ

A historic village on the Old Brahmaputra with Mughal-era mosques and the site of a Baro Bhuiyan fort.

Egarosindur in Pakundia upazila was once a river trading town and a stronghold of Isa Khan, the Baro Bhuiyan leader who fought the Mughals; it is mentioned in the Akbarnama. Little of the fort remains above ground, but the village keeps two old mosques. The Shah Mahmud Mosque is a square, single-domed brick building with octagonal corner towers, entered through a small gatehouse with a curved do-chala roof, and bits of terracotta still show on its walls. The smaller Sadi Mosque of the 1650s stands a few hundred metres away, and an old dighi lies nearby.

How to get there

Bus or CNG from Kishoreganj town to Pakundia, then a CNG or auto to Egarosindur village (about 8 km from the upazila centre).

Good to know

Both mosques are in use for prayers, so visit outside prayer times and dress modestly. Ask locals for the Sadi Mosque, which is easy to miss.
