Sonakanda Fort
সোনাকান্দা দুর্গ
A Mughal river fort on the Shitalakshya, with thick walls and a big round gun platform built against pirates.
Sonakanda is one of the river forts the Mughal governor Mir Jumla II is believed to have built around 1660–63 to guard Dhaka and Narayanganj from Magh and Portuguese pirates. It stands on the east bank of the Shitalakshya in Bandar, opposite Narayanganj town. The fort has a walled enclosure with loopholed battlements and, on one side, a massive raised circular platform where cannon were mounted. Together with Hajiganj and Idrakpur it forms a set of three Mughal water forts you can visit in a day.
How to get there
Cross the Shitalakshya from Narayanganj's Bandar ghat by boat or ferry, or go by road over the bridge, then take a rickshaw to Sonakanda.
Good to know
Combine it with Hajiganj Fort on the opposite bank. Mornings are quieter.
