Hajiganj Fort
হাজীগঞ্জ দুর্গ
A Mughal water fort on the Shitalakshya, built to guard the river approach to Dhaka.
In the 17th century the Mughals built a chain of river forts to stop Magh and Portuguese pirates sailing up to Dhaka. Hajiganj Fort, inside Narayanganj city, is one of them: a walled enclosure with crenellated brick ramparts and a round bastion for cannon. It is small and can be seen in half an hour, but standing on the walls helps you imagine the river wars of Mughal Bengal. Sonakanda Fort, a sister fort, lies across the river at Bandar.
How to get there
Rickshaw from Narayanganj city centre (Chashara) towards Hajiganj.
Good to know
Cross by ferry to Bandar to see Sonakanda Fort as well.
