Nakipur Zamindar Bari (Haricharan Roy's house)

In Nakipur, the main settlement of Shyamnagar upazila, zamindar Haricharan Roy Chowdhury built his estate in the mid-1800s. It has a two-storey L-shaped building about 19 metres long with open verandahs, a pair of Shiva temples, a nahabatkhana (music gallery), a puja pavilion, a dispensary, and ponds. Locals still call it Roy Chowdhury bari, and tell that his mother dreamed of where sacks of treasure lay hidden. Neglect has left both the house and the temples close to ruin. It is right on the way to Munshiganj and the Sundarbans.

How to get there

Bus from Satkhira to Shyamnagar (about 2 hours); the zamindar bari is in Nakipur near the H.C. Pilot High School, a short rickshaw or van ride.

Good to know

Ask for 'Haricharan Royer bari' or 'Roy Chowdhury bari'. The buildings are fragile, so look from outside and do not climb.
