Gombhira
গম্ভীরা
A witty folk performance in which a 'grandfather' and 'grandson' sing about everyday troubles.
Gombhira grew out of older devotional songs in the Malda–Chapainawabganj region and became a lively form of social commentary. Its best-known form is a dialogue in song between Nana (grandfather) and Nati (grandson), dressed in rustic clothes, who joke and argue about prices, politics, floods and local scandals. The music uses harmonium, dhol and other folk instruments, and the audience laughs along at the jabs. Performances are staged at fairs, festivals and cultural events across the district.
