Fuchka and Chotpoti

ফুচকা-চটপটি

Dhaka's favourite street snack: crisp shells filled with spiced peas and tamarind water.

Fuchka and Chotpoti

Fuchka are small hollow crisp shells, cracked open and stuffed with spiced mashed dried peas, potato, egg and onion, then eaten in one bite with sour tamarind water. Chotpoti uses the same pea filling served warm in a bowl, topped with egg, chilli and tamarind. Every Dhaka neighbourhood has its carts, but Bailey Road, the TSC area at Dhaka University, Dhanmondi Lake and Shantinagar are long-time favourites. A plate is cheap and evenings are the busiest time.
