Saidpur Railway Town

সৈয়দপুর রেলওয়ে কারখানা

Home of the country's largest railway workshop since 1870, and a town shaped by the railway.

Saidpur Railway Town

Saidpur's railway workshop was set up in 1870 and became the largest in the country, repairing and rebuilding locomotives and carriages. Around it grew a planned colonial town of brick quarters, churches, clubs and markets, and communities from across the subcontinent came to work here. Generations of families have worked in the workshop, and railway culture still shapes daily life. Walking the old railway colony gives a sense of this layered history.

How to get there

The workshop and railway colony are in the heart of Saidpur town.

Good to know

Entering the workshop needs official permission; the colony streets can be explored freely.
