Wangala Festival

ওয়ানগালা উৎসব

The Garo harvest festival, with drums, dancing and thanks to the sun god Saljong.

Wangala is the post-harvest festival of the Garo people, offering thanks to Saljong, the sun god, for the year's crops. In Birisiri and nearby villages it is celebrated in late autumn with drumming, traditional dress and group dances. Rice, rice beer and the first fruits of the harvest are part of the rituals. Visitors who come with a local contact are usually welcome to watch.
